Employee photo Meet Janice Clark. For 25 years, she has been a friendly voice on the phone, guiding callers through the legislative process and answering their questions on the status of bills. Clark greets callers to the LRC’s Bill Status toll-free phone number, a service that keeps citizens informed of goings-on in the General Assembly. With her help, callers to the Bill Status Line (1-866-840-2835) can track bills by their number or follow issues by topic or sponsors. Clark also helps them navigate the legislature website. When not busy in the Bill Status Office, Clark helps with work in the LRC Project Center. “I’ve loved it, every bit of it,” she says. “You get to help people and every once in a while you get callers who say ‘Thank you. We had no idea how this works. You not only helped us but you informed us, too.’” Clark is working her 22nd General Assembly session – having manned the phones since before the sessions went from biennial affairs to annual ones. Sadly, it will be her last. She is retiring in May to spend more time at home with her husband. “(This session) has been bittersweet, really. It’s my swan song. I’m really going to miss it. I’m going to miss everyone – they’re not just co-workers, they’re friends,” Clark says. “But I knew it was time.” Retirement’s also going to offer a chance to spend more time with her two sons, six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, Addie, though. And when the next session comes around, Clark’s sure she’ll be online looking up information and following bills’ progress like she has for the last quarter century. “It’s going to be a hard habit to break,” she said.
