Employee photo Meet Amit Shanker. Some folks are creative, and some people are mathematically deft. Frankfort’s Amit Shanker is both. In his job as a Committee Analyst for the Legislative Research Commission’s Appropriations and Revenue staff, he uses both writing skills and mathematics to help lawmakers achieve their policy goals by drafting bills, writing fiscal notes and learning about costs and expected revenue. “I think the most enjoyable part is there is a puzzle to be solved,” he said. “How can things be accomplished and not run afoul of the Constitution?” If legislation has to do with taxes, it’s very likely it will come through Appropriations and Revenue staff. Prepared for the workforce with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Kentucky and a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., Shanker began his tenure with Appropriations and Revenue in December. He said he relishes the free flow of ideas and data. “As you have more information, you can make better decisions,” he said. Work does not always entail doing the same thing day after day, and Shanker said he likes it this way, including when the General Assembly is very busy when in session. “I think the cycles make it more exciting than if things are pretty much the same throughout the year.” When Shanker isn’t working, he plays tennis and spends time with family members who reside in Frankfort and Lexington.
